The system of complete separation of the races in South Africa was known as apartheid.

This system of segregation was present in South Africa from the late 1940's all the way up until the early 1990's. This discriminatory policy helped in making Nelson Mandela famous, as he advocated against this system and served a long prison sentence for breaking the rules established under apartheid.
