When comparing tissue types it is important to observe and compare cellular characteristics and extracellular matrix space. There are four basic types of tissue: connective, muscle, nervous, and epithelial. Connective- binds the cells and organs of the body together and its functions are the protection, support, and integration. Muscle- excitable contractile tissue which response to stimulation; provides movement. Nervous- provides the propagation of electrochemical signals in the form of nerve impulses and enables communication within the whole body. Epithelial- covers exterior surfaces of the body, envelops internal cavities and forms certain glands.
