Why did the nightly knocking at the temple finally stop in “Old Man of the Temple” by R. K. Narayan?

It was when the ghost finally came to terms that he is dead and that he must move on.  It took an exorcism to take him out.  The temple was the only place that he has known and he did not want to leave but later on realizes it’s time to move on.
