Colonel Robert Shaw starts to respect African-Americans as true soldiers after seeing the high level of conduct among them and bravery they exhibited. This was an impressive and positive attitude, taking into account the fact that African-Americans used to get lower pay in the army, they received insults frequently and had more low key jobs.
