hi i personally think that it made them feel more free as they were around their own people but discriminated as their were of a different shade
if your teacher ask "what do you mean by different shade" tell them that we are all the same shade of white because a sheet of pepper is white but if u hold it up to the skin u will realize that the skin is a darker shade of white or a lighter shade of black.
