Question: Describe soil and it’s roles in agriculture. Address how long it takes for soil to form and the challenges of arid soil.

Answer: The Earth is covered by soil, only a few dozen centimeters thick. It’s described as a “hot bed” of activity that is basically it’s very own ecosystem. The insects, worms, and the billions of bacteria living inside the soil, help to digest mineral, animal, and plant matter left behind to create the nutrients needed for the plants that we need to survive to grow. These plants not only feed us, but the animals we eat as well. The process of creating 2.5 centimeters of soil in arid areas takes around 500 years.
