A student evaluated -4+x for x= -9 1/2 and got the answer 5 1/2 what did the student do wrong

Well, first let's plug the value of x into the equation:

-4-9 1/2= -13 1/2

The student didn't pay attention to the negative sign, what he did was 9 1/2 -4 instead of -9 1/2 -4.
