Miguel Hidalgo was a priest and wrote the speech Grito de Dolores to end the rule of Spain. Along with his followers, he was successfully taking over major cities in Mexico. He was soon at the capitol, but hesitated and lost the chance to seize it. After his defeat at Calderón Bridge, he fled north but was captured and executed.
