Why were rifles and axes so important for the westward journey?

1. Rifles were used to trade, and to give as gifts to Native Americans. But also they used it to kill animals, etc.

2. Axes were also sometimes given as gifts, and they used it to throw them also they were hand axes which made them be thrown quicker and they could chop things like wood.
