Grover felt like a failure due to him failing to save Thalia, who ended up dying on Half-Blood Hill when Luke, Annabeth, and Grover were surrounded by monsters. They were about to make it to camp, but the monsters had found them before they could be safe. Thalia got immortalized into a tree by her father Zeus, and Grover felt the shame of not being able to protect her.
