Ok, call me out if I'm wrong, but the answer is because two candidates ran for the same party.

Explanation:

The candidates for the 1824 presidential election were John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William Crawford, and Henry Clay.  John Quincy Adams was the winner of the election and a Democrat, and so was Andrew Jackson, so two people of the Democrat Party ran for president at the same time.
