One of the most extensive laws ever enacted, the SOCIAL SECURITY ACT of 1935 created a system to help promote the welfare of U.S. citizens. It was part of Roosevelt's second New Deal. Social Security provides benefits, including a pension system for retirement, a system of unemployment compensation, and assistance for the disabled.
