let the numbers be x and y

x + y = 5

x - y = 5/3

from above eqn,

x = 5/3 + y

then, on substituting to the 1st eqn,

5/3 + y + y = 5

5/3 + 2y = 5

2y = 5 - 5/3

2y = 10/3

y = 5/3 or 1 1/3

then,

x will be

x = 5/3 + 5/3

x = 10/3 or 3 1/3
