so combine like terms first

2q - q = 10 - 6

now solve

2q - q = q    and    10 - 6 = 4  

soooo

q = 4

1) Move 6 to the other side and q to the other side:
2q + q = 10 - 6
2) Combine like terms: 
q = 4
3) Solve:
q = 4
