Protein are produced in two major locations, in the cytosol and on the outer surface of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. There are two types of ribosomes, free ribosome and bound ribosomes. The free ribosome exist freely in the cytosol and produce proteins there while the bound ribosome is bound to the endoplasmic reticulum and produce protein at that site.
