Volumetric thirst is associated with fluid loss from cells ( hypovolemia), while osmometric thirst is associated with fluid loss from extracellular spaces and increase in the osmotic pressure of the interstitial fluid relative to the intracellular fluid, thus producing cellular dehydration.
