Although Lincoln lost the senate election to Stephen Douglas his campaign helped him win the presidential nomination.
This happened in 1860 when Lincoln was nominated to become president and actually won the presidential elections, becoming the 16th President of the United States. He won over John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglass.
