a dog tag is a military identification "badge" basically a piece of aluminium shaped like an oval with your basic information engraved into it that you were around your neck the children wore the because in the 50s there fathers were probably in ww2 and they wore them as a fashion/patriot  thing i hope this helps its supper hard to explain...
