I believe the answer is: to increase the genetic variation in a population
Mutations could be used to change the genetic structure in an animal products that could lead to the development of a certain desired characteristics.
For example, through a genetic mutation, we can manipulate the chickens to only produce offspring with high meat to bone ration..
