The enzyme helicase unwinds the double stranded DNA molecule. This enzyme is essential during the process DNA replication because it separates the double stranded DNA into single strands allowing each strand to be copied. The action of helicates sets up a replication folk and a replication bubble the enhances the first step of replication by DNA polymerase.
